Don't Leave It All for Christmas Eve
Every year, the same thing happens: December 23rd arrives, you realize the whole family is coming tomorrow, and suddenly you're deep-cleaning the kitchen at 11 PM while wrapping presents with your feet. Sound familiar? This year, let's do it differently. A simple four-week countdown takes the panic out of holiday prep and means you actually enjoy Christmas instead of arriving at it exhausted.
Week 1 (Late November): The Deep Stuff
Start with the tasks that take the most effort but won't need redoing before Christmas:
- Clean windows and mirrors: Natural light matters even more in December when the days are short. Clean glass lets in every bit of daylight Grande Prairie has to offer.
- Deep clean the oven: You'll be using it constantly for holiday baking and the Christmas dinner. Clean it now so it's ready.
- Carpets and rugs: Vacuum thoroughly and spot-treat stains. If they need steam cleaning, now is the time — it takes a day to fully dry.
- Declutter guest spaces: If family is staying over, clear the guest room now. Change bedding, dust, vacuum, and make it welcoming.
- Clean light fixtures and ceiling fans: Dusty fixtures are noticeable when you add holiday lighting.
Week 2 (Early December): The Living Spaces
Focus on the rooms where holiday life happens:
- Living room deep clean: Vacuum under all cushions and furniture. Dust every surface including bookshelves and mantels. Clean the fireplace if you have one — nothing says Christmas like a working fireplace that doesn't smell like old ash.
- Dining room: Clean the table and chairs, polish any wood surfaces, clean the chandelier or overhead light. If you're using the good china or special tablecloths, pull them out now and wash them.
- Put up decorations: Decorate while the house is freshly cleaned. It feels intentional rather than chaotic.
- Clean the fridge: Toss expired items, wipe shelves, and make room. December grocery hauls are massive, and you'll need the space.
Week 3 (Mid-December): Kitchen and Bathrooms
The spaces that take the most use during the holidays:
- Kitchen scrub-down: Counters, backsplash, stovetop, microwave, small appliances. Clean everything that guests might see or touch. The kitchen becomes the social hub during holiday gatherings.
- Bathrooms: Deep clean all bathrooms guests will use. Fresh towels, full soap dispensers, stocked toilet paper. Add a small candle or diffuser for a welcoming touch.
- Entryway: Clean and organize the boot area. December in Grande Prairie means heavy winter boots, and your entryway will handle a lot of traffic. Clean boot trays, fresh mats, organized hooks.
- Stock up on cleaning supplies: You'll need them for quick cleanups during the holidays. Paper towels, all-purpose spray, garbage bags, hand soap refills.
Week 4 (Christmas Week): The Quick Pass
Because you did the heavy lifting already, this week is just a maintenance pass:
- Monday/Tuesday: Quick vacuum and mop of all main areas. Wipe kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
- Christmas Eve morning: Fresh hand towels in bathrooms, empty all garbage cans, light a candle, and put on some music. You're done.
