The New Year Home Reset: Start Fresh in Every Room

New year, new start — including your home. A practical room-by-room guide to resetting your space and starting the year with clarity and calm.

A Clean Slate for the New Year

There's something powerful about starting a new year with a clean, organized home. After the holiday whirlwind — the hosting, the cooking, the wrapping paper everywhere, the Christmas tree needles that migrated to every room — your home deserves a proper reset. And honestly, so do you.

This isn't about New Year's resolutions that fade by February. This is about practical actions that make your home feel fresh and set you up for a calmer, more organized start to the year.

The Holiday Cleanup

First, address the aftermath:

  • Take down decorations intentionally: Don't just shove everything in a box. Sort as you go — toss broken ornaments, donate decorations you didn't use, wrap lights properly so they don't become a tangled disaster next December.
  • Deep clean the tree area: Vacuum extensively. Real tree needles hide in carpet fibres for weeks. If you had a live tree, check for sap on floors or furniture and clean with rubbing alcohol.
  • Kitchen reset: Toss holiday leftovers that have lingered too long. Clean out the fridge completely. Run the dishwasher on a cleaning cycle. Wipe every surface.
  • Recycle and dispose: Break down all boxes, take recycling out, clear wrapping paper, remove dead flowers and old centrepieces.

Room-by-Room Reset

Kitchen:

  • Check every pantry item. Toss anything expired or stale from the holiday baking surplus.
  • Reorganize the fridge and freezer — oldest items to the front, fresh items to the back
  • Deep clean the oven from holiday cooking
  • Wipe down all small appliances

Bedrooms:

  • Flip or rotate your mattress
  • Wash all bedding — sheets, pillowcases, duvet cover, pillow protectors
  • Clean out nightstand drawers — this is where random clutter accumulates
  • Donate or discard clothing you didn't wear in the past year (the holiday gift influx is a good trigger for this)

Bathrooms:

  • Toss old or expired products — that shampoo bottle with 1 centimetre left, the expired medicine in the cabinet
  • Deep clean grout and fixtures
  • Replace old toothbrushes (dentists recommend every 3 months — January is a natural swap point)
  • Wash or replace bath mats and shower curtain liner

Living areas:

  • Declutter surfaces — coffee table, side tables, shelves. Return borrowed items, discard junk mail, organize books
  • Vacuum under and behind all furniture
  • Wash throw blankets and pillow covers
  • Organize the media console and cord management (new year, new chance to not have a cable jungle)

Set Up Systems for the Year

A reset is only as good as the maintenance plan that follows it:

  • Schedule your cleaning: Whether it's a personal routine or professional service, put it on the calendar now. Don't leave it to motivation.
  • Establish a landing zone: A spot by the door for keys, mail, and daily essentials. One basket, one hook set, one small table. This prevents the daily clutter spread.
  • Create a seasonal cleaning calendar: Schedule the big tasks — window washing in spring, vent cleaning in fall, appliance deep cleans quarterly. When it's on the calendar, it gets done.
