Getting Your Home Guest-Ready in 2 Hours or Less

Company's coming and you don't have all day. A priority-based guide to making your Grande Prairie home look and feel welcoming — fast.

The "Company's Coming" Panic

We've all been there. You get the text — "Hey, we're passing through Grande Prairie tomorrow, mind if we stop by?" — and suddenly you're looking at your house with fresh eyes. The eyes of someone who hasn't developed selective blindness to the pile of shoes by the door, the toothpaste spots on the bathroom mirror, and whatever's happening on the kitchen counter.

Deep breath. You don't need to deep clean the whole house. You just need to hit the right things in the right order.

The Priority Framework

Guests experience your home in a predictable order. Clean in that same order:

  • Priority 1: Entryway and living room — first impression, where they'll spend most of their time
  • Priority 2: Bathroom — every guest will use it, and they'll judge (even if they don't mean to)
  • Priority 3: Kitchen — if you're hosting any kind of food or drink
  • Priority 4: Everything else — close the doors. Bedrooms, offices, laundry rooms — if guests aren't going in there, don't waste time on them

Hour 1: The Visual Sweep

First 20 minutes — Declutter:

  • Grab a laundry basket or bin. Walk through the entryway, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Everything that doesn't belong goes in the basket. Stash the basket in a bedroom and close the door.
  • Put all shoes in the closet or on a shoe rack
  • Stack papers and mail into one neat pile or toss in a drawer
  • Clear kitchen counters — appliances to their usual spots, dishes into the dishwasher

Next 20 minutes — Living room and entryway:

  • Vacuum or sweep the main areas — don't move furniture, just get the visible surfaces
  • Fluff and straighten couch cushions
  • Wipe the coffee table and any visible surfaces
  • Fold and arrange throw blankets

Last 20 minutes — Bathroom:

  • Clean the toilet — bowl, seat, base. Non-negotiable.
  • Wipe the mirror, counter, and faucet
  • Put out fresh hand towels
  • Empty the garbage
  • Check that there's soap and toilet paper (the basics that are mortifying to run out of)

Hour 2: The Polish

Kitchen (20 minutes):

  • Load and run the dishwasher
  • Wipe counters and stovetop
  • Clean the sink
  • Quick mop of the kitchen floor

Scent and ambiance (10 minutes):

  • Open windows briefly for fresh air, even in winter — just a few minutes
  • Light a candle or use a subtle diffuser. Skip heavy air fresheners — they scream "I'm covering something up"
  • Turn on a few lamps. Warm lighting makes everything feel cozier and hides imperfections

Final walkthrough (10 minutes):

  • Walk through your front door as if you're arriving for the first time. What do you see? What do you smell? Fix anything that catches your eye.
  • Close doors to any room that doesn't need to be open
