Your Home Survived Another Winter — Now Reset It
By the time March rolls around in Grande Prairie, your house has been sealed up for five months. The windows haven't been open since October. Salt and gravel have been tracked through every room. The furnace has been running non-stop, circulating dust and dry air through every vent. Your home needs a proper reset, and there's no better time than when the first chinook hits.
Start With Air Quality
This is the most overlooked part of spring cleaning, and in Alberta it might be the most important:
- Change your furnace filter: If you haven't changed it since fall, it's working overtime. A fresh filter immediately improves air quality and furnace efficiency.
- Clean all vent covers: Pull them off, soak in warm soapy water, wipe down, and replace. You'll be amazed at the dust buildup.
- Open your windows: As soon as temps allow, crack windows on both sides of the house for a cross-breeze. Even 30 minutes of fresh air circulation makes a difference after five months sealed.
- Dust ceiling fans: They've been off all winter, collecting a layer of dust on every blade. Clean them before you switch to cooling mode.
The Deep Clean Checklist
Kitchen:
- Pull out the fridge and stove — clean behind and underneath
- Deep clean the oven interior (self-clean cycle + wipe down)
- Clean the range hood filter (soak in hot water with dish soap and baking soda)
- Wipe down all cabinet fronts — grease film builds up over winter
- Clean the dishwasher (run empty with vinegar on hot)
Bathrooms:
- Scrub grout — winter humidity and sealed bathrooms accelerate mildew growth
- Descale showerheads — Grande Prairie's hard water leaves mineral deposits
- Clean exhaust fans — pull the cover, vacuum the fan blades
- Wash shower curtains and liners
Living areas:
- Move furniture and vacuum underneath
- Clean all window tracks and sills — salt and condensation create buildup
- Wash windows inside and out (once exterior temps allow)
- Flip and vacuum mattresses
- Launder all throw blankets, pillow covers, and curtains
The Garage and Entry Reset
Don't forget the spaces that took the worst beating:
- Sweep and hose out the garage — all the gravel, sand, and salt that accumulated over winter
- Deep clean entryway flooring — address any salt damage now before it sets permanently
- Wash boot trays and mats, or replace them if they're worn out
- Transition seasonal gear — store winter boots and coats, bring out lighter jackets
