Vinegar and Baking Soda: The Only Two Things You Actually Need

Forget the cabinet full of specialty cleaners. Vinegar and baking soda handle 80% of household cleaning. Here's exactly how to use them for everything.

Your Grandma Knew What She Was Doing

Somewhere along the way, the cleaning industry convinced us we needed 15 different specialty products — one for glass, one for counters, one for the stove, one for floors, one for the bathroom, and on and on. Your grandmother cleaned her entire house with vinegar, baking soda, and soap. And her house was spotless.

These two ingredients are cheap, non-toxic, and genuinely effective for the vast majority of household cleaning. Here's the room-by-room breakdown.

Kitchen

  • Countertops: Spray with 1:1 white vinegar and water. Wipe with a microfiber cloth. Done. (Note: don't use vinegar on natural stone — marble, granite. It etches the surface.)
  • Stovetop: Sprinkle baking soda on burnt-on food. Spray with vinegar (it'll fizz). Let sit 10 minutes, scrub with a non-scratch pad. Comes right off.
  • Microwave: Microwave a bowl of 1 cup water + 2 tablespoons vinegar for 5 minutes. The steam loosens everything. Wipe clean with a cloth.
  • Sink: Baking soda paste (baking soda + just enough water to make a paste). Scrub with a cloth, rinse. Gets stainless steel gleaming.
  • Cutting boards: Sprinkle with baking soda, scrub, rinse, then spray with vinegar to disinfect. Air dry.
  • Dishwasher: Place a cup of vinegar on the top rack. Run an empty hot cycle. Follow with baking soda sprinkled on the bottom, run a short hot cycle. Eliminates odor and buildup.

Bathroom

  • Toilet bowl: Pour 1 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar into the bowl. Let fizz for 10 minutes. Scrub with a brush, flush. Clean and deodorized.
  • Showerhead descaling: Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, rubber-band it over the showerhead so it's submerged. Leave overnight. Rinse in the morning. Grande Prairie's hard water builds up fast — do this monthly.
  • Grout: Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to grout lines. Spray with vinegar. Scrub with an old toothbrush. This works better than most commercial grout cleaners.
  • Mirror and glass: 1:1 vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Newspaper or microfiber cloth for streak-free results.

Laundry

  • Fabric softener replacement: Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser. It softens clothes, reduces static, and removes detergent residue. Your clothes won't smell like vinegar — the scent evaporates during drying.
  • Stain pre-treatment: Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to stains 30 minutes before washing.
  • Washing machine maintenance: Run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups of vinegar monthly. Cleans the drum and eliminates musty smell.

Floors

  • Hard floors (tile, vinyl, laminate): 1/2 cup vinegar per gallon of warm water. Mop as usual. Cuts through grime without leaving residue. Again — not for natural stone.
  • Carpet freshener: Sprinkle baking soda liberally on carpet. Wait 30 minutes (or overnight for stubborn odors). Vacuum thoroughly.

The Limits

We're honest about what these two can't do. Heavy grease in commercial kitchens, severe mold, and hard water stains that have built up for years sometimes need stronger professional products. But for daily and weekly home maintenance? Vinegar and baking soda handle 80% of it. Save your money on the specialty sprays and invest in a good set of microfiber cloths instead.
